If you're hoping for the biggest movies from the biggest studios to hit a theater near you anytime soon, forget it. COVID restrictions has made studios weary of releasing their tentpoles (heh) in theaters without even the assurance of a massive turnout.
The toys, though, keep chugging along. Bandai, in particular, recently released their S.H.Figuarts version of Wonder Woman from Wonder Woman '84 (WW84), the sequel to the critically-acclaimed DCEU movie. So while waiting for WW84 to come out (December 16, 2020 at the time of this writing, but we've been told other dates before), join me as I review the collectible action figure inspired by it!
Standing at 6 inches flat, Figuarts Wonder Woman WW84 isn't exactly the image of a statuesque Amazon. She is however taller than usual for female figures of this line, so if your import Justice League collection is needing a Wonder Woman, you're in luck!
Figuarts Wonder Woman WW84 captures the otherworldly beauty of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in action figure form so well, it's unnerving. Face printing tech has gone a long way! The figure comes with two face plates, the default front-facing one and the Figuarts signature "looking slightly to the right" one. I have absolutely no idea why Bandai keeps doing this face in their Figuarts, but I'm just thankful mine is printed on correctly!
The detailing on Figuarts Wonder Woman WW84 is a thing of beauty. Hair is sculpted as if it's softly being blown by the wind (and captures movie Diana's incredible curls), armor is screen accurate right down to the intricate grooves, and paint is expertly applied with no slop! Thanks, Bandai!
Internalizing S.H.Figuarts's tagline of "Pursuing character expression through humanoid action," Figuarts Wonder Woman WW84 is able to move in many wonderful ways thanks to the standard Figuarts articulation that includes butterfly joints that let her move her arms in front for a convincing "cross armed" pose.
Figuarts Wonder Woman WW84 comes with the bare minimum of accessories, which is a shame. She comes with a couple of gesturing hands so you can display the figure however you like, whether it's looking at you and your life decisions disapprovingly or letting a baddie "talk to the hand" before opening a can of Themysciran whoop-ass on the poor soul who thinks they can take her on.
At least she comes with her signature lasso! The lasso is molded in a single piece of plastic and is painted gold. It's pliable but I have yet to test its posing capabilities, so I've opted to just agree with whoever molded it the default way.
As far as S.H.Figuarts releases go, Figuarts Wonder Woman WW84 is, to put it succinctly, aight. With bare-bones accessories, all you're left with is a perfectly fine Gal Gadot action figure. But you know what? Sometimes that's really all you need.
