The very first comic I bought with my own money was Civil War #2, right as Mark Millar and Steve McNiven were turning the Marvel Universe on its head. The rivalry between Captain America and Iron Man was at its hottest here, and it was my first exposure to what I would come to know as Iron Man's Extremis Armor.
Designed by artist Adi Granov during his and Warren Ellis' run on Iron Man in 2005, the Extremis Armor was this sleek red number that took the Armored Avenger to new heights of power and coolness. I've always wanted a figure version of this armor, but the Return of Marvel Legends version is terribly outdated.
As if hearing my prayers, Hasbro went and released an updated version of one of my favorite Iron Man armors, which I'm reviewing today! Follow me as I gaze in slack-jawed awe at the new Marvel Legends Extremis Iron Man action figure!
We've come a long way from the Return of Marvel Legends version of this armor from a decade ago. This Extremis Iron Man is taller, has better proportions, and is an entirely new sculpt rather than an upscaled Marvel Universe figure. The sculpted details are plentiful and true to Adi Granov's design, though I wish they found additional budget to add a wash to bring them out. The few painted parts it does have are done well with minimal slop, which I'm thankful for.
I love the red plastic they used for this as well, as this iteration of the armor was drawn less "shiny" than its predecessors. It doesn't look plastic-y or toy-like in hand, so rest assured you have a badass Iron Man figure worthy of display.
For a man in armor, Extremis Iron Man is very mobile. There's a surprising amount of articulation here, and none of them are hindered by the sculpt. They even found an aesthetically pleasing solution to Iron Man's shoulder pauldrons always hindering articulation: by casting it in pliable plastic and tabbing it in place with the shoulder ball joint. Good job, Hasbro!
Of course, we can't really prove an Iron Man figure has enough poseability without the good ol' Three-Point Landing test. As you can see, the Marvel Legends Extremis Iron Man passes, but I had to do some finagling to get it to look natural.
Accessory-wise, Extremis Iron Man comes with two splayed open hands and blast effects you can peg into said hands or into the heel holes in the feet for flying poses. The blast effects are the same as all the others included in previous Iron Man figures, so no surprises here.
All in all, I'm very pleased with this release. The new Marvel Legends Extremis Iron Man figure is the type of update I applaud Hasbro for, despite them pricing us out of the hobby slowly but surely. There have been misses as of late, but when this iconic action figure line hits, it's to the moon.
I hope you found this review helpful. Thanks for reading and stay safe out there!
